Sitting my domestic battery directly on the bottom of the hull without a platform under it would allow me to use a bigger taller battery but would necessitate tilting it.
They must be able to cope with some tilt otherwise you would have to sail upright all the time. Just noticed it's a sealed battery, the above only applies for normal batteries like mine. If it's not sealed, it'll leak and melt your flesh. I wouldn't recommend leaving it that way for an extended period, but it does work if you don't have an alternate solution.
My biggest fear would be accidentally connecting the wrong terminals. Add a comment. Active Oldest Votes. Not a good idea as it corrodes or damages most things. Improve this answer.
Solar Mike Solar Mike Never tip of invert a lead acid battery, it could lead to acid spilling as others have said. Sign up or log in Sign up using Google. Sign up using Facebook. After all, it just has the electrolyte sloshing around between the plates in the cells all the time anyway. You could probably turn the battery upside down and it would still work for a while disregarding the venting requirements.
What kind of battery is it? Batterys take alot of bouncing in your car, boat, airplane, what ever its in without any damage. A severe fall can break a plate or post connection, but tipping isn't an issue. Make sure the acid covers the plates just see liquid when you open the caps and you're good to go. Years ago I picked up a battery at Sears. I proceeded to change out the old one in the parking lot. Without thinking I knelt down and tipped the box sideways to pull out the new battery.
I noticed I had spilled something, but I didn't realize I had knelt in it. When I got home I noticed that one knee of my blue jeans had a large hole. It didn't hurt the battery but it did cost me a pair of jeans. Electrons need to stand up straight. Tipping them over tends to make them sleepy and lose their charge.
Never do this. But most motorcycle and garden tractor batteries are sold dry so acid must be added to each of the cells. Always wear rubber gloves and eye protection when handling acid and pouring the acid into the battery to prevent burns and eye injury. Overcharging a wet cell lead-acid battery can produce toxic and corrosive hydrogen sulfide gas. Hydrogen sulfide gas has a strong rotten egg odor. It can cause health symptoms in concentrations as small as 2 to 5 ppm, and can be toxic in concentrations of 50 to ppm.
